Excerpt from Chapter 2 – “Core-Self Alignments – Postural Ease And Physical Balance”:

As we abide in the abdominal center-point of gravity and the still arising of core-Self in shikantaza and zazen-only, we cultivate the daily experience of postural ease by embodying an effortless spinal uprightness. By effortless spinal uprightness, I mean the Way that the still center-point of gravity naturally aligns all of our spinal vertebrae into an erect S-shaped curve without creating muscular tension or tightness. Our effortless spinal uprightness establishes the body of postural ease while allowing our vertebral column to remain pliable and always ready to withstand varying degrees of stress as we physically move and act in everyday life.

Excerpt from Chapter 1 – “Abiding In Core-Self – Extending Ki In Shikantaza”:

As we arise from zazen-only to consciously extend Ki into the matters and affairs of our daily life, we do so from the visceral confidence and somatic easefulness of our core-Self. We practice living with ease and joy in the body of shikantaza by constantly abiding in our core-Self beyond thinking. We do this from the moment we wake-up until the moment we fall asleep at night. We embody shikantaza by cultivating and conserving our Ki beyond labeling, measuring, and thinking. However, as we practice living as core-Self in the body of shikantaza, we increase our extended Ki to forty percent while containing and conserving sixty percent within our hara. This increase in the extension of Ki allows us to conscientiously take care of the business of everyday life while meeting all beings, things, and events with the openness, clarity, and compassion of our core-Self.
