BOUNDLESS INTIMACY: The Eye And Treasury Of Core-Self
by Andrew Shugyo Daijo Bonnici, Ph.D.

Excerpt from Chapter 8 – “Beginner’s Heartmind”:

“To remain curiously attentive to this only moment of unbounded timelessness with beginner’s heartmind is to gratefully embody wonder and awe in the simplicity and ordinariness of linear time. To embody the wonder and awe of beginner’s heartmind while entangling with the birthless stillness of core-Self is to somatically comprehend that core-Self is exactly this only moment of timelessness that flashes everywhere without coming or going. As each timeless and unbounded moment of core-Self is happening everywhere without coming or going, our beginner’s heartmind cherishes core-Self as the still essence and vast Oneness of total reality.

BOUNDLESS INTIMACY: The Eye And Treasury Of Core-Self by Andrew Shugyo Daijo Bonnici, Ph.D.

Excerpt from Prologue – “ZAZEN-ONLY”:

There is a timeless, wondrous, and exquisite Way to live in boundless intimacy, vast Oneness, limitless interdependency, and immeasurable gratitude. It is the ever fresh Way of just sitting as core-Self inside of “zazen-only.” Zazen is pronounced “zaahzen” with equal emphasis on each syllable. “Za” is viscerally sitting within the still vibrancy of core-Self inside of just sitting. “Zen” is living from your core-Self that silently illuminates the surface and depth of total reality. To viscerally embody the still vibrancy of core-Self inside of zazen-only is to brilliantly arrive in boundless intimacy and ungraspable enlightenment beyond attaining, gaining, owning, and knowing.

When I use the term “only,” as in zazen-only, I mean to say that the embodiment of zazen is peerless and beyond comparison. Zazen-only is peerless because it is not a mentally designed method, belief, or technique for gaining, grasping, or attaining anything. Zazen-only is the wholehearted Way of living as a radical human being from our visceral core-Self. Zazen-only is the ancient practice of embodying the true nature of total reality, living in sacred entanglement with life and death, and joyfully abiding in boundless intimacy with all beings and things. When we just sit as core-Self inside of zazen-only, we viscerally realize our total completion and fulfillment as a radical human being with not one thing lacking.

BOUNDLESS INTIMACY: The Eye And Treasury Of Core-Self

Excerpt from Chapter 2 – “Core-Self Alignments – Postural Ease And Physical Balance”:

As we abide in the abdominal center-point of gravity and the still arising of core-Self in shikantaza and zazen-only, we cultivate the daily experience of postural ease by embodying an effortless spinal uprightness. By effortless spinal uprightness, I mean the Way that the still center-point of gravity naturally aligns all of our spinal vertebrae into an erect S-shaped curve without creating muscular tension or tightness. Our effortless spinal uprightness establishes the body of postural ease while allowing our vertebral column to remain pliable and always ready to withstand varying degrees of stress as we physically move and act in everyday life.

BOUNDLESS INTIMACY: The Eye And Treasury Of Core-Self

by Andrew Shugyo Daijo Bonnici, Ph.D.

Excerpt from Chapter 1 – “Abiding In Core-Self – Extending Ki In Shikantaza”:

As we arise from zazen-only to consciously extend Ki into the matters and affairs of our daily life, we do so from the visceral confidence and somatic easefulness of our core-Self. We practice living with ease and joy in the body of shikantaza by constantly abiding in our core-Self beyond thinking. We do this from the moment we wake-up until the moment we fall asleep at night. We embody shikantaza by cultivating and conserving our Ki beyond labeling, measuring, and thinking. However, as we practice living as core-Self in the body of shikantaza, we increase our extended Ki to forty percent while containing and conserving sixty percent within our hara. This increase in the extension of Ki allows us to conscientiously take care of the business of everyday life while meeting all beings, things, and events with the openness, clarity, and compassion of our core-Self.

BOUNDLESS INTIMACY: The Eye And Treasury Of Core-Self

by Andrew Shugyo Daijo Bonnici, Ph.D.

Excerpt from Chapter 1 – “Abiding In Core-Self – Extending Ki In Zazen-Only”:

In our Way, we embody shikantaza by living from the still vibrancy of core-Self while being somatically mindful of the great functioning of Ki in our everyday life. This somatic mindfulness of Ki is viscerally transmitted in our daily embodiment of core-Self inside of zazen-only. It is in zazen-only that core-Self viscerally comprehends the vital functioning of Ki in this Only Moment Body. To viscerally comprehend the vital functioning of Ki through your core-Self in zazen-only is to somatically realize how to generate Ki in your hara, how to viscerally contain Ki in your Kikai, and how to viscerally extend a sensory field of Ki energy into your immediate surroundings.
